Portable air conditioner window kits and venting guide

A compressor-based portable air conditioner must vent hot air outside. For common outward-opening UK casement windows, the easiest temporary solution is a zipped fabric seal; the most effective reusable solution is usually a securely fitted rigid panel cut for the exhaust adaptor.

The goal is not simply to hang the hose out of an open window. You need a short exhaust route and a reasonably sealed opening so the unit does not pull hot outdoor air straight back into the room.

Before ordering, identify how the window opens rather than relying on the words “universal kit.” Many portable units include a rail designed for vertically or horizontally sliding windows, which does not directly seal a side-hinged UK casement.

Fabric window seals

Fabric seals attach around the opening frame with hook-and-loop tape and close around the hose using zips. They are inexpensive, removable and useful for renters.

Their weaknesses are air leakage, appearance and durability. Fit the tape to a clean, dry surface, avoid pinching the hose, and close every zip as tightly as possible around the adaptor. Do not obstruct the window’s safe operation or create an unsafe escape arrangement.

Acrylic or polycarbonate panels

A rigid clear panel can provide a cleaner and tighter outward-opening window seal. The panel is measured to cover the opening and cut for the manufacturer’s hose adaptor.

Check:

  • the panel is thick and supported enough not to flex out;
  • the edges cannot damage the frame;
  • the insert can be secured safely without relying on the exhaust hose;
  • the adaptor matches the hose diameter and locking method;
  • rainwater cannot run indoors; and
  • the window can still be restored and locked when the unit is not in use.

If cutting plastics or fixing near glass is outside your experience, use a competent fabricator or installer.

Sash and sliding windows

An adjustable rail kit can sit in the reduced opening while the sash closes against it. Add compressible weather strip where the rail meets the frame, but do not force or damage the window.

Security matters at ground level. A loosely trapped panel is not equivalent to a locked window, so never leave an insecure arrangement unattended.

Exhaust-hose rules that improve performance

  • Keep the hose as short and straight as the manual permits.
  • Do not extend it with a smaller or makeshift duct.
  • Avoid crushing tight bends behind furniture.
  • Keep the hot hose away from the cool-air outlet.
  • Use the supplied adaptor rather than pushing the hose through fabric.
  • Do not wrap or insulate the hose unless the manufacturer permits it.
  • Keep the outdoor discharge clear of curtains, plants and obstructions.

The hose carries concentrated heat. A long length radiating inside the room makes the air conditioner work against itself.

How to check whether the seal is working

With the unit running, inspect the opening for visible gaps and feel around the perimeter for warm draughts. In a single-hose system some replacement air will still enter elsewhere because the unit expels indoor air; the window seal should stop the most direct short circuit next to the exhaust.

Close internal doors and shade the window. If the room temperature does not fall, confirm the unit is in cooling mode, the filter and intakes are clear, the condensate warning is off and the capacity matches the room.

Venting without a window

A purpose-made wall sleeve or vent to outdoors can be effective, but it is not a casual DIY shortcut. The route must avoid hidden services, prevent rain and pests entering, support the duct, and comply with the building and property permissions that apply.

Do not exhaust into:

  • a loft or roof void;
  • a cupboard or ceiling cavity;
  • a chimney or shared duct not designed for the appliance;
  • a corridor or another room; or
  • a tumble-dryer connection unless the air-conditioner manufacturer explicitly approves it.

All of those locations retain or redistribute the heat rather than rejecting it safely outdoors.

Renting and leasehold homes

Use a non-destructive fabric or removable panel solution unless the landlord or freeholder gives permission for alterations. Photograph the frame before applying adhesive, test a discreet area and make sure the window can be closed and locked when the kit is removed.
