A straightforward single-room wall-mounted split air conditioner commonly costs around £1,500–£3,000 supplied and installed in the UK in 2026. Treat that as a budgeting range rather than a quote: unit capacity, brand, access, pipework, drainage and electrical work can change the total substantially.

The single-room range is consistent with several current installer and cost-guide publications. Multi-room figures vary too widely to price confidently without a site survey, so obtain itemised quotations based on the same specification.
What changes the installation price?
Capacity and number of rooms
A larger cooling load normally means more expensive equipment. Use the BTU calculator to establish a defensible starting capacity before requesting quotes. For multiple rooms, ask whether separate single splits or one multi-split offers the better combination of resilience, efficiency and external-unit placement.
Pipe run and access
Back-to-back installation, where indoor and outdoor units sit on opposite sides of the same wall, is normally simpler. Long pipe runs, work at height, concealed services, scaffolding, difficult condensate routes and restricted outdoor access add labour and materials.
Electrical work
The system may need a suitable circuit, local isolator and protective equipment. Ask who completes the electrical work and whether testing and certification are included. Do not assume an advertised installation package covers upgrades to the consumer unit or a long new cable route.
Condensate drainage
Cooling removes moisture from indoor air. Gravity drainage is simple when a continuous fall is possible; a condensate pump adds equipment, noise, maintenance and cost. Confirm where the water will discharge without causing staining or nuisance.
Equipment and controls
Brand, warranty, low-temperature heating performance, Wi-Fi controls, filtration and indoor-unit style all affect equipment price. Compare like with like: a cheap quote for a basic unit is not equivalent to a premium system with a longer warranty and different performance data.
What should a proper quote include?
Request a written, itemised quotation covering:
- exact indoor and outdoor model numbers;
- cooling and heating capacities;
- proposed indoor and outdoor locations;
- pipe length, trunking and wall penetrations;
- condensate route or pump;
- brackets or base for the outdoor unit;
- electrical supply and isolator;
- refrigerant work, pressure testing and commissioning;
- making good and waste removal;
- warranty terms, VAT and exclusions; and
- expected servicing requirements.
The cheapest headline can become the most expensive job when essential work is added later.
Installer qualifications
GOV.UK states that people working on stationary refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment containing F gas need the appropriate qualifications for tasks including installation, servicing, leak checking and refrigerant recovery.
Ask the business to explain which qualified person will perform and commission refrigerant work. A “DIY-fit” label does not automatically make it lawful or sensible to connect a refrigerant circuit yourself.
Planning, leases and neighbours
An outdoor condenser changes the exterior of a property and produces sound. Requirements depend on location, property type, siting and the rules in your UK nation. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and leasehold homes can involve additional consent.
Before accepting a quote, check with the relevant local planning authority and, where applicable, the freeholder or managing agent. Ask the installer for outdoor sound data and avoid siting a condenser where it is likely to disturb bedroom windows or neighbours.
Installation cost versus running cost
A split system has a high upfront cost but is usually quieter and more efficient than a portable unit for the same useful cooling. A portable unit can still be the lower-cost choice when use is occasional or permanent work is not allowed.
